Interpol’s Problems with Abusive Red Notices Are Not Going Away

Interpol has recently published new information on the operation of the Red Notice and Diffusion Task Force – NDTF – which is responsible for screening abusive applications by Interpol member states.

Commenting on the work of the NDTF in a series of articles for the Red Notice Monitor

BSQ Partner Roger Sahota notes that Interpol's own data suggests that the problem of abuse of Interpol's systems by rogue member states remains a concern.

According to figures released by Interpol, the percentage of Red Notice and Diffusion alerts that were refused or cancelled by Interpol during the screening process has remained steady over the last few years between 2018 - 2022 or is rising slightly.

This is despite Interpol’s very public commitment to act with the “utmost due diligence“ in stamping out this type of abuse.

This trend is confirmed when we examine the data from the Central Commission of Files – the CCF – which deals with appeals against Red Notices that have been published and pass the screening process.  This reveals that in percentage terms the number of appeals received has remained more or less static from 2019 - 2021.

In a recent article for Euronews Interpol Interpol’s General Secretary Jürgen Stock, on the 9th May 2023, commented that Interpol is “constantly reviewing and enhancing our processes to ensure the system is as strong as possible.”

Based on these latest statistics Interpol has good reason to remain vigilant to guard against some member states abusing and manipulating its systems.
