Police and Government agencies can seize cash belonging to anyone if they suspect it represents the proceeds of unlawful conduct. This applies, for instance, to cash found in a safety deposit box or discovered in a handbag during an airport security search. The cash that is seized can be forfeited. Individuals affected by cash seizures can apply for the return of the property taken at a Magistrates Court and have a right of appeal to the Crown Court.
